Morning Bonding

So we started going back to work this week, Heather in the mornings and me in the afternoons. Its kind of weird being the sole caretaker for him for four hours a day. Sure, we sleep for the first hour, but at 9, we get up and I find some milk for him while making my coffee and breakfast, then we sit down and eat together. We’ve had a mix of success so far in the first three days, but that’s to be expected. Today, he ate well, and is now just watching me type away. Okay, to be honest, I’m not quite sure what he’s looking at. He always seems focused on something these days, but when we look to see what he’s looking at, we can never find anything interesting.

We’ve started watching the Price is right again. I used to watch it as a kid, but Drew is so funny and cynical on it, its totally worth watching again. He totally thinks the lame small products that are just there for pricing are ridiculously funny and useless. Sometimes he can do nothing but just laugh at how pathetic a $20 key-chain digital camera is.

Ansel’s such a cutie that no matter how fussy, un-sleepy, or irritable he is, when he just looks at you confusedly in that newborn way, you can’t help but forgive him. I’m convinced that cuteness is a baby defense mechanism. He’s getting better and better at holding his head up, and is not nearly as wobbly as he used to. We are now currently awaiting his first smiles. Its an exciting and confusing time.

Anyway, I just wanted to post a little update to let everyone know how we’re moving along. Also, remember, I twitter more than I post here, so if you miss my updates, you should follow me on twitter.

Ugh x 2

We just had a brief summer shower and it has resulted in two dramatic changes on campus.

1) It is now so hot out there that I literally burst into sweat the second I walked out the door – and if you’ve never seen me, I’m a fairly lightweight individual who is not prone to instant and profuse sweat.

2) The previously obnoxious smell of bird shit on campus has become completely overwhelming and incapacitating. In all the years I’ve been on campus, I don’t think the bird shit has ever been quite this bad. It really is horrendous and quite a negative impression to give to new and prospective students. Who wants to go to a school that is covered in and smells so much like bird shit.

Welcome to good ol’ bird shitty UNT. Where are colors are Green and White, with that little black spot in the middle.

Well shit… Steve’s image for the lab didn’t take. I feel bad for him because I know how that feels.

Oh, and a special thanks to him for putting himself out to finish my iPodShuffle offer. Now I just have to wait for him to go green. At least I know where he lives, unlike jdogg0140!

Ah, I feel things winding down. I still have a huge pile of comptuers to work on and I can’t see my desk , I can feel that it is Friday and tomorrow is going to be all better. Still need to get some Ronsonal and make sure my torches are up to snuff.

Either way, I want to get one more computer up and in service before I go home. Unfortunately, it has about 1000 applications on it. Ah well, back to the task.

Thank God Its Friday…

Well, I finally finished that machine at 8:45 last night. It was so late that heatherejcHeather and I decided that we would go to Applebees for dinner rather than go home and make dinner or eat leftovoers. Finally got home, gave my dogs a quick pat, and crawled into bed.

I almost made it through a whole episode of M*A*S*H, but not really. I remember Heather’s laugh from time to time and wondering what joke I missed. I was just awake enough to turn off the TV, DVD Player, and light and go to sleep.

Slept really well, had a dream about an interesting prestige class for D&D (boy is that dorky). Now I’m all ready for another day.

Oh, and it doesn’t even look like that faculty member came up last night to use his computer at all.

Fewer late nights now that I’m out of the lab

This is the first really late night I’ve had since I quit managing the lab. Today I had to get a new visiting asst. professor’s computer up before he finally snapped and started shooting people (I just found out he’s an ex-marine). Anyway, it should have been a simple process. Pull machine from the back, install archived image from the server, throw it in the office and walk away happy. I told him I’d have it done by 1:00.

Immediately upon setting up his machine and putting it in his office, it started rebooting. We started tearing down possible problems. We reimaged it, we swaped out the power strip, we swapped out the power cord, we rolled back the network driver, we unplugged the network, we reimaged it, we swaped out the mouse, the keyboard, the monitor, we reimaged it and updated patches, we reimaged it, updated patches, updated virus definitions, nothing worked. We finally decided that not only was it infected with virii, but all the images for that particular model were also.

Around 7:00 norelenCraig found another equivalent machine in the back. We put it in place, left the network unplugged and booted it up. It appeared clean, and only a bit out of date so we moved patches over via a flash drive. After making sure we had protected as much as possible, we finally hooked up the network and started running online updates. Its still running stable and I’m about to pull a new image of it for future use. I expect I’ll be done here in about 45 minutes.

So at any rate, I finally sent Heather home because while I don’t think I’m going to be up here that much longer, the dogs have been in their cages for about 12 hours, and that’s just mean. Wish me luck, folks, it seems to be finally in the home stretch.

I think I’ve found a Nexus

there is a room in this building that I now believe is a nexus of anti-computer energy.

any machine that is placed in this room will quickly become corrupt and unable to function. at first it was just the resident machine. we pulled the machine from the room and completely rebuilt it. even now, it will not function. in its stead, I have replaced it with a new machine that ran fine in my office. now that new machine is acting just like the first.

the room is cursed.

Another Day – Another Bullet in my Head

Its the last Thursday before classes, and while this would usually mean I’d be staring fondly off the third floor balcony over the lightwell, thinking what a nice ker-splatt I’d make on the concrete below, I have to say, I’m doing better than that this year. Since corwin75Steve and I traded jobs, I feel bad watching him stress, but I’m still not entirely stress free either. I’ve still got 20+ computers to distribute and a work room full of shit that needs to be dealt with.

Also, if you don’t read some other journals on my friends list, I should inform you that I’ve decided to go back to school this Fall. I’m going to start work on my MFA in Photography. Heather and I have been talking about it for a while and we weren’t sure where the money was going to come from. We finally decided that we’d go ahead and put the first half of the tuition on a credit card and pay the later payments out of our account. So I’ll be picking up the cameras and doing some serious shooting. Apparently the class has a crit every three weeks with an assignment of 20 perfect prints.

I may be calling for models so if you know anyone who doesn’t mind being photographed a lot and wouldn’t expect to be paid to stand around while I take pictures, I’d appreciate some help. I haven’t decided at all what I’m going to be photographing, but I though I’d just throw that out there. I used to have an online portfolio, but apparently it’s been lost so I’ll try to get some samples of what I used to do. I don’t do portraiture, but I often have people in my photos.

Anyway, back to the grind.

GGgGggGGGggGGgGGG

Today is the first day back for Faculty on campus… and as usually, its one of the craziest days of the semester. I need a drink… hell, I need a lot of drinks. Steve and I are both getting a crash course in how busy each of us were in our respective prior jobs at this time. Each of us thought the other one was really bored, but now we’re realizing that we just cover it up really well.I’ve got so many computers to update, and while I’m doing that, fix ones that broke over the summer, that I’m up to my eyeballs in orders. Yeesh!

This weekend we did some WoW stuff. Lets just say, guild gripes aside, it was all good. I also found out that my brother got to scam his way into Gencon. Bravo, bro!

I’ve only got 10 minutes left, but I’m going to see what I can do with it. Quick tip: its always easier to tell a student they’ve lost all the data on their disk, than it is to tell a faculty member that. It shouldn’t be, but it is.
