Grad School: Semester 3 – Week 2
Well, week two is coming to a close but in a way it feels like week one. Last week our photo studio class was all but canceled and our photo history class was a brief overview of how much reading we are doing. I have to say I’m pretty overwhelmed by how much reading we will have to do.
I volunteered to be in the first crit group on top of that so I have to have my first group of work ready for Sept 21st. I need to figure out how to shoot photos again, I need to figure out how to scout locations again, I just need to get out there and do it.
I have a bit of a rejuvenated eye as to what I’ll be doing photographically this semester after class today, so I’m excited to do it, I just need to squeeze it into my already hectic schedule. While I was really enjoying Steve’s Eberron game, I’m kind of glad he decided to end it indefinitely, this way I get a weekend back. I’ve posed the option of moving my game to his saturday, which then frees up all my Sundays to work on class stuff. I also will still have early saturday mornings to go out and shoot. Derek is running his P’Tolus game this Saturday and I hope to have at least 150 photos before I play. I’m crossing my fingers and toes on this. There’s a lot of construction going on in Denton, so I have that going for me… I also need to find some abandoned spaces and take advantage of them as well.
This semester is going to be rough, but I’m pretty jazzed about it. I just need to pace myself, not get behind or loose steam, just take each challenge in stride and it will all work out.
I was talking with Dornith after class today and I am very excited about this semester. I like everyone in class and feel a very cool vibe happening in the group (though I still feel a bit of the wallflower, surprisingly enough). I expect to see some great things in that class, and I hope to be a part of at least some of that greatness.
Additionally, I am presently VERY excited for Heather as well. She’s got some very great prospects both academically and professionally on the horizon and things look really good. I’ve not seen her so chipper in a while. I wish we had the money to celebrate the elevated mood alone let alone the potential celebration we may need to have later. I’m sure she’ll post about it later in her journal, so you can read about it there.
Tomorrow may be a bike ride day.

This Friday is Bollywood night and we have chosen Paheli. I’ve only seen clips of this one, but from what I’ve seen and heard, it should be fun. Its got Shahrukh Khan and Shahrukh Khan, as well as our old friends Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjees, and Anupam Kher. Its fantastical and fun and great music.
Weather permitting (and its been permitting a lot lately), we’ll be outside. We’re going to try to start the film at dusk as usual (8:09 pm).
Feel free to bring drinks, snacks or what have you. Nothing is required, everything is welcomed! Oh, but chairs are recomended as we tend to run out.
If you need directions, please respond and I’ll be sure to get back to you ASAP.

Setting up my Studio
So I came up to do some photocopying and set up some more stuff in my studio. The more I set up, the more I realize I have a lot more to do to get it all ready. I’ve got a bulletin board thats half painted with black primer, but I ran out of black primer before I could finish.
I’ve got this giant piece of MDF that I’m debating not needing. I was going to turn it into a display board, but I have a new idea involving magnets. I’ve got to get some more bookcases or shelves in here, though, I’ve got stuff on every horrizonal surface in the whole damn place and still no where to put things. I’m still trying to get used to the desk, I still haven’t decided if it feels like its the right hight and build for me. I may just have to sit at it a lot more. I did get my water filter installed on the sink so now I can get some bottles and keep cold water in my fridge, but that’s kind of a minor thing, it just meant I didn’t have to pay for a new filtered pitcher. The faucet filter fit perfectly, I didn’t even ned any of the adapters I brougth with me.
I need to get a bank of lights to go up where the display board is going to be built (if I get all the ideas worked out for it) and I’d love to get some better lamps. Beau, superhero that he is, left me a bunch of shit thats making the studio much more useable, but me and my particular tastes demand more. I want this place to be MINE! but that may take some time. I guess I’ve really only been in here a week so I have time to make that happen (espeically if I’m going to be in here for something like 4 years).
Anyway, I should be reading but I’m just so happy that my comptuter is set up and my studio is coming together that I can’t really focus on reading right now. I need to feel more accustomed in here before I can really start to feel productive. I’d love to paint the walls a bit, but I so don’t see that happening. Instead I’m thinking of “tapestries.” Okay, more like sheets strung up to give the room a different shade and to absorb sound (I can definitely tell I’m in a room that is almost entirely concrete.
I guess I should see if I can crank out a chapter before I have to go get tarkas for Steve’s game. I’m trying to think of what I want for dinner on the way. I’m kind of debating between Sonic and Taco Bueno, both of which never really appeal to me, but for some reason, today, they do.
Oh well, I’ve said enough to feel justified in posting. Enjoy your three day weekends, you bastards. I’ll be working on Monday and cursing you all!

So the first day of the semester has come and gone. I know that my first day was better than a lot of other folks, so I count myself as lucky. Really, the most disappointing bit of the day was leaving my coffee sitting on the counter at home this morning. I had to go over to the union and buy some really coffee for too much money when my home made coffee would have sufficed just as well.
I got the syllabus for my Art History class and looked at what its going to entail. Its going to be a lot of reading and a lot of writing. We’re reading a book a week and writing a 2-3 page abstract on each book. That’s a lot more intense than the class I took last semester. I’m sure I’ll survive, but for right now, its feeling overwhelming. My leisure activities are starting to feel like they may be on thin ice.
I dealt with a lot of new faculty and staff today, mostly adjuncts, and helped them get set up and make sense of the bass-ackwards computing situation that is UNT. I think I have made a good impression on them as a friendly, helpful, and reliable resource. Its what I strive to be, so it feels good when they seem to feel that way about me.
I conducted Dornith’s first class for her this morning, which really amounted to me handing out the syllabus and babbling for a few minutes, then introducing Steve and letting him babble a bit more. They didn’t seem totally bored to tears, only slightly. It was my first “official” act as photo grad. Pshh, whatever.
Speaking of which, I’ll only have one class this week since Dornith will still be out for our first class as well. At least thats what I’m assuming from the information I’ve managed to gather over the past 9 hours.
My game went really well this weekend, or at least I think it did. From having no idea on Saturday afternoon to a full blown fortress invasion in less than 24 hours, I’m pretty pleased. It was a tough grind through three floors of bottlenecks and mexican standoffs. The party was pretty much completely exhausted of resources and expendable hit points by the time they dropped the (almost) final boss at the top. They skipped over some incidental rooms and fights, but all in all, I felt it was almost perfectly balanced to the party at the end. As hard as it was, it earned them a justifiably large chunk of xp. Now I need to figure out where they’re going next.
shit, the longer I sit here waiting on Heather so we can go to the rec center and work out, the less likely I am to want to go once she finally gets down here.

QUELF!
No, its not a dirty word, its a HILLARIOUS board game. If you’ve ever played Cranium, its kind of like that, only the guys who developed it were channeling mentally instability when they wrote the cards.
Basically this game gets you up and doing all kinds of crazy things, from holding your hands on your head until your next turn, writing poems about underwear, to playing leapfrog. There are also trivia and logic cards, as well as full group participation challenges. If you have some friends and like playing nutty board games you should definitely try to get a copy. You will NOT regret it! Play it drunk, play it sober, just be ready to laugh either way!
You can read more about the game (and see some sample cards) at http://www.quelf.com
If you live in Denton, you can buy it (or order it, rather) at Talon Comics and Games. He’s got a couple copies in the store, and will order more as necessary.
If you are just curious and would like a demonstration, find at least two friends, contact me and we’ll see about getting a game together at Talon.
