So, I my computer is overloaded with goofy extra applications and skins. It doesn’t seem to matter how clean of a build I put on it, it’s always lagging in some situation or another.

At the same time, I have this dual processor G5 sitting next to me on the other side and I must admit, on occasion, I wonder why I even have a pc. I could probably just move the mac over into the PC’s old home, drop everything and just be a Mac guy. There are some things, however, that I think are holding me back, most of which are the free programs I use nearly every day. I guess if I found Mac equivalents for them, I wouldn’t have any reason not to switch anymore.

As far as I can tell, the things that are holding me back are Trillian, Semagic (or a decent LiveJournal Client at least), Audiogen (my streaming music server), Notmad (my Nomad sync software), and I know it sounds stupid, but I like having a highly skinable MP3 player. Windows Media Player has some slick skins and I always love having a good looking skin sitting on my desktop.

Pretty much everything else is the same, mac or PC, but some of these above listed applications are make or break. They are the last straws holding me back from swapping over to a Mac at work.

instead of Trillian, use Adium: http://www.adiumx.com/

for Semagic, well, there isn’t anything quite as good, but Phoenix is OK: http://homepage.mac.com/thorshammer/phoenix.html

I don’t do streaming music, so can’t help there. I am a podcast type of girl.

if Nomad is your mp3 player, I can’t help there either

You can get all sorts of skins and media players. In fact, here is WMP for OSX http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx

And then there is always the love of the ever changing background. The option in Tiger to pick a lot of background pics, put them in a folder and let them change every so often on their own, very nice 🙂
