It was not the cartoon, it could never have been the cartoon, but it took a concept made infinitely adored by throngs of children in the 80’s and reinvented it in such a spectacular and successful way for those same people, now 30 years later. There were enough tributes and throwbacks to the original series, and enough glitz and glamor to make most everything feel like it just belonged. so Optimus Prime had lips, big deal. Bumblebee got a MUCH needed upgrade from the cartoon, but he still performed the same role, he was just super badass to boot. All the Transformers were just so cool, and so slick, and they moved and transformed how I would have wanted them to – from slow, deliberate transforms, to high intensity, nearly instant jumping transformations. I really did enjoy it, and that’s all that really matters in the end.
