So I’ve decided that I want to make chainmail again. Not full suits of armor or anything so ambitious, but at first just bracelets and trinkets, and maybe as my skill and knowledge of more complex weaves grows, more intricate jewelry and accessories.
I have to wait until next month to start because I don’t have any money right now, but I think that I’ll be able to sell the stuff once I start getting a good weaving rhythm going. It’ll be something I can do while watching movies for class, or TV, or sitting in the office waiting for installs. It’s like knitting for boys.
I found an incredible site that sells all kinds of precut rings in all kinds of materials, so I’m really excited, but I just have to tell myself to wait.
So who wants a clunky practice bracelet?

So you’re gonna sell chainmail instead of cookies to go to PAX? lol
Hey make me a clunky practice bracelet that goes from the wrist to the finger… you know the V shaped kind… I’ll buy the ring for the end of it 😉
Why don’t you make your own rings? Heavy gadge wire + Wire cutters + Pencil* Time = Rings
I’ve made my own rings before.
a) I don’t like doing it, its the worst part of fashioning chainmail.
b) Wire cutters are WAY slow and you have to spend months just getting enough wire to be worth using.
c) my choice of metals is limited, whereas this website has an AMAZING selection.
d) my cuts are no where as precise as their cuts, and thus were a bit, uh, pinchy.
e) I hate coiling and cutting.
and I don’t know how long it will be before I’m making the triangle bracelets. I’m starting with just straight bracelets (Talon has one at his store that I’m fashioning it after)
well, after I make enough money to counter the cost of the rings to begin with, we’ll see what I can save up.
I lost my last piece of chainmail at my last public belly dancing performance. It was awful. I had an awesome circlet. I’m always up to sample practice pieces.
I did the coiling and cutting one time… SERIOUSLY not worth the effort it takes. I used a dremel tool and cut-off wheel, and burned up about 10$ wotht of disks to make enough links for a 3″ x 10″ strip of mail…
I actually stopped because i didnt want to make any more links. Whats the website?

Might be a good alternative for some of those extra classes you need to take. Jewelry making studio classes.
you know, I hadn’t though of that, but a metals studio could be fun.
I had been concentrating mostly on classes that would benefit my photography, but I think I would really enjoy Metals.
Sign me up as a guinea pig. Or the wife too. 😉
