There’s no Ice in my Drink…

…in which I speak on work, monday off, Juno, and Cloverfield

Today was supposed to be an ice day today. Not that any of us really expected it to happen, it was a nice dream nevertheless. In addition, as I sat down at my desk at work, it all of a sudden occurred to me that I had forgotten to shave the lower half of my face this morning. I shaved everything above the beard, but not my neck below the beard. I’m thinking that these are somehow indicators as to how this day is going to go. I’ve not got a lot of pressing items to take care of today. I have only one computer to roll out today because its too wet and cold to install the other two (they are actually destined for another building). I’m going to be trying to learn a new piece of software today so that we can convert our inventory over to a dual platform format rather than only being able to open it up on a Windows machine (which would be really handy, since I am the one to deal with our inventory more than anyone else, and I use a mac exclusively).

The past week has been pretty nice, actually. Monday was MLK day and while we had the day off of work (a rare event nowadays), our daycare was still open, so we packed Ansel up and sent him away for the day. Then Heather and I had a day all to ourselves, the first real day like that since before Ansel was born. We made some time for ourselves in the house, then went to Studio Movie Grill to see Juno, and finished up with a bit of shopping afterwards. It may have not been the perfect first day alone, but it was pretty good, and very much appreciated. Had today been icy, we’d have been tempted to do the same again, but alas, here we are at work again.

Juno was awesome, and the soundtrack, though not in my typical field of preferred musical genre, has really infected me and I’m having a hard time not just listening to it constantly. I don’t want to make myself sick of it, but I’m learning the lyrics to songs for the first time in a long time, and that’s kind of fun. Ever since Ansel came along, I’ve regretted not knowing the lyrics to any songs because I like to try to sing to him. Since I don’t know any songs, I have to make them up, and while I know he’s not a serious critic, I’d still like to sing good for him. Most of my songs are 2-4 lines repeated over and over again. It usually make him happy though, and that’s all that matters, I guess. Oh, back to the topic of Juno, it was fiercely independent (with that stilted pacing, spaced dialog, and dramedy crossed genres), it was seriously entertaining and witty. We thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m so glad we chose that movie to see on our day off. It was the highlight of the day.

On Wednesday, four of us decided to go see Cloverfield. It was getting great reviews and my blogs were overflowing with praise for it, so I got Craig, Derek, and Matt together and we headed out to the Rave to check it out. Yeah. all that praise is some kind of sick joke just to get more people to go see it, because the best thing about the movie was Matt’s popcorn, and he didn’t even share it. The movie was slow and boring, the characters were incapable of investment, the monster was really only a side note, and the camerawork (while yes, it was purposeful and conceptual) just got old after a while. The first twenty minutes (that being the first QUARTER) of the film was entirely focused on some surprise farewell party and some relationship drama floating around the party. The entire time I was trying to figure out why I would even care. Then after nearly a third of the movie had passed, “the event” finally happens and it turns into the monster movie we had anticipated, but by then I couldn’t dredge up any energy to care. I already hated most of the characters and just waited for them to get eaten. The one character that I found entertaining died fairly early on (at least she died in a fun way, her head blew clean off), and the rest of the characters took the rest of the movie to kick off. The “cameraman” was by and far the most annoying character in the movie (“hey, hey rob, did you see that? what was that? rob, hey rob, rob, rob, hey, hey, hey rob, what was that? what? what’s going on? rob? hey rob…”), and unfortunately he was ALWAYS there. ALWAYS behind the camera, and ALWAYS talking. It was like having the worlds most annoying theater-goer sitting right next to you, talking and poking you the whole time. Ugh. How is this movie doing so well?
