“Don’t talk to me about the baby. I’m sick of everyone telling me what to do.”

You are Claire. You are a very kind and caring person. You’re not the
bravest on the island, but you will stand up for yourself when the need
arises. Compared to the other survivors, you have a pretty clean past
and you’re open and honest about most things. It’s a good thing, too –
Turniphead needs you to be nurturing and caring in order for him to
grow up and NOT become the antichrist. Luckily, Charlie seems more than
happy to assist you.

Your polar opposite is: Sawyer.
You are similar to: Charlie and Sun.

no new information on the furnace, no new information on turkey day, no new information on anything really. I just felt like posting something, even though I don’t really have anything to post about.

I don’t even have a meme to do. how sad.

The furnace issue continues to plague us. As I said, I went online to try and find a solution, but that didn’t pan out. Saturday, I contacted a local HVAC service company and they didn’t return my call until today. Rather than schedule a visit, they instead gave me some more things to test and check out. Still we have flame, but no flame detection. This has gone beyond frustrating to just boringly annoying. I’m getting to where I firmly believe I cannot fix it in my house and that something is truly wrong, but I’d rather fix it if just to save money. I appreciate the people at Cogburn’s trying to help me out, I really do, but I’m just getting tired of it being cold in the house. Now, even when its 60°+ outside, it barely peaks at 59° in the house. Its gotten to where we would almost be warmer by just opening up all the windows.

On the positive side, I borrowed some wood from corwin75 on Saturday, and on the way home got an inspiration to check out one of the many locations I’ve been photographing for trees that have been cleared. I actually found a pretty good cache of wood to burn, unfortunately, the stuff that would actually fit in my Baja was a bit old and rotted. It still burns, but it burns up really fast. There were a couple tree-trunks there (about 2-3 feet in diameter and almost 25 feet long) of exceptional quality that would probably last us a year or more. Too bad I have no way to collect them.

Webber Hinged Cooking GrateAnyway, we went out and got the grill grate I’ve been wanting for a couple years now, specifically for Thanksgiving. Its got hinged sides so that after an hour or so of cooking, when you need to add more coals, you don’t have to try and juggle a 12 pound turkey resting on the cooking grate long enough to pour a new chimney starter worth of blazingly hot coals into the grill. You know, I’m just trying to make life easier. I do feel a little bad because we actually just bought a new grill grate about three months ago because the old one was beyond cleaning. So now we have two… Guess I’ll just use one for special occasions when I think I might need to dump in some extra coals. We also picked up a bag of Applewood chips to help smoke that bird. Its shaping up to be a really good turkey. I almost wish it was bigger. Those leftovers are hardly going to last. I need to remember to take a container for the leftover turkey as well. So on Turkey day I have to remember the following:

  • Grill (duh)
  • new Grill grate
  • charcoal
  • applewood chips
  • drip pan (or two)
  • container for leftovers
  • welding gloves (just in case)
  • chimney starter
  • newspaper
  • wand lighter
  • meat thermometer
  • and, of course, the Turkey

Also, I want to try to clean out the lid of the grill before then too, just to clear out some of the soot. I hope this turkey comes out even half as good as the first one. Mmmmmmm. Turkey.

Attention Movie Night Goers!

In order to battle back the demon of independent film and weird foreign films, we will be calling in The Goonies! Hopefully they will save us from questionable cinema.

They should show up on screen at about 8:00, two weeks from tonight – next week is thanksgiving, I figure most of you will be free from terror (or enduring an all new kind of terror) with your families.

That is all. Thanks for playing.

Okay, seriously, someone over at Netflix has to come up with a function to shuffle your movie queue. Mine is in a horribly unentertaining order right now, and with nearly 300 movies, its tough to pick and chose what should be near the top.

I just want to be able to hit shuffle and see if it comes up better than it did before.

Edit: apparently someone wrote a Firefox script to do just that… I’m testing it now, I’ll let you know how it works!

So this past week we determined that our furnace was not furnacing. Regardless of what we set the thermostat at in the house, it never got warmer than 55° so I knew there had to be something wrong. I looked up the symptoms online and determined that something was wrong with the flame sensor. I found out that it can be removed and cleaned and that might fix the problem, but after a thorough cleaning with some sandpaper yesterday, still no flame detection. Basically, the flames that are supposed to heat the forced air, come on but go right back off because the furnace doesn’t realize they are on at all. So to keep the house from blowing up, it shuts off the gas.

Something in the sensor system is flawed. I need to get someone out to look at it or it won’t ever work and if it gets any colder, its gonna get pretty unbearable. Last night we had a roaring fire in the fireplace, and even then it barely warmed the living room. Fireplaces just aren’t designed to heat rooms and houses anymore. We also blew through almost all of our wood last night too, so even if we wanted to have another fire, we’d have to go find more wood (anyone know where we can get cheap firewood in the Denton area?).

Anyway, we also had a toilet that was running pretty much 24/7 because of a faulty fill valve. Of course I didn’t know that it was a faulty fill valve until after I went online and looked up the symptoms. The toilet just kept filling the tank past the fill line and just dumped water through the overflow valve. So yeah, on first inspection it was obvious that we needed a new fill valve. Also, the kicker was that the float on the old fill valve would just randomly drop into the water. So we went to Lowes, picked up some stuff to try and clean that flame sensor (which, as I said, didn’t work for diddly), and picked up a new fill valve. I installed the fill valve which took no time at all, and found that now, while it wasn’t overfilling anymore, there was water leaking somewhere else. I finally determined that the flapper was corroded and water was just leaking back into the bowl from the tank – much better than it leaking onto the floor or something like that.

We packed ourselves into the nice warm car and went back out to Lowes to get a flapper. Of course, we made the mistake of not taking the original flapper with us, so we had to guess blindly at what flapper to get. We must have guessed correctly because its in and everything was fine as of this morning. Still no heat, but at least our water bill shouldn’t be 6 times what it normally is.

So yeah, I still don’t want to have to pay someone to fix my furnace, but its gonna get cold eventually, and we can’t camp out by the fireplace every night. I’m just concerned that its going to be the chip board that controls the entire furnace system. I hear those can cost $300 before labor costs. Stupid furnace.
